Our services include, one-on-one personal training, group personal training and group exercise classes including, Bootcamp, Powercise (like Zumba), Lean Ladies and Knockout - a mixed martial arts based program to get your heart pumping. Our focus is on creating great base fitness, getting results, improving your nutrition, all while having some serious fun!

HOT TOPIC: Food Myths

Information can be a great thing, but with everything at your fingertips…the world of health and fitness can be confusing….

 

Whilst we don’t have mega moustaches or wear berets, we DO have Myths of our own to bust.

 

Some of the myths that we would like to put to rest are as follows.

 

Food combining: You shouldn’t mix proteins and carbs in the one meal!

 

The theory that certain foods should not be eaten at the same time, especially carbohydrates such as grains, potatoes and rice with protein, for example red meat, chicken and fish.

The food combining theory also suggests that fruit should be eaten separately.

 

There is no solid evidence to indicate that this is true.  If this theory was true then the human race would not have survived for hundreds of thousands year as many basic foods such as beans grains nuts and seeds all contain both carbs and proteins!!! MYTH BUSTED!

 

Eggs: Can they raise your cholesterol levels???

 

Your body already produces around 75% of the cholesterol you have, and the other 25% comes from your food intake.  What this means is although you can increase the amount of cholesterol through various foods, it is relatively insignificant compared to what your body naturally makes.

 

Genetics is what determines the amount of cholesterol your body has and although ingesting foods that have a small amount of cholesterol in them can raise levels slightly, the trick is not to over indulge in ANY food.

 

If you need to blame anyone on your cholesterol, don’t take it out on the humble egg, blame your parents J MYTH BUSTED!

 

Eating carbohydrates after 3 pm will make me fat!!!

There is little evidence to show that eating carbohydrates after 3pm will make you gain fat.  If this was the case, then no-one that works shift/night work would not be able to ever eat carbohydrates or they would all be overweight!

 

The fact is; your body doesn’t have a clock attached to it.  Your metabolism can slow down towards the end of the day as your body goes into rest mode. Where many people go wrong is, they don’t eat much throughout the day and then compensate by coming home and eating one large calorie laden meal until they go to bed.  If you are not going to burn off these calories regardless of the time (either carbs or fats) they will go straight to the hips. MYTH BUSTED!

 

So next time that you are surfing the net looking for the latest ‘secret’ to fat loss….keep these things in mind.  The fact is; there are no ‘secrets’ and be careful about what you find.  Eating well, exercising and leading a healthy lifestyle will always win the fat loss stakes.
