Serious Fitness is a personal training and fitness studio based in Coburg, Melbourne, with regular bootcamp classes held in Coburg, Bulleen and Carlton. Our services include, one-on-one personal training, group personal training and group exercise classes including, Bootcamp, Powercise (like Zumba), Lean Ladies and Knockout - a mixed martial arts based program to get your heart pumping. Our focus is on creating great base fitness, getting results, improving your nutrition, all while having some serious fun!

HOT TOPIC: Water - Keeping your water intake up when the mercury drops

Our dams don’t seem to have enough of it but over 70% of our bodies are made up of water.

 

Water is important to break down, digest and excrete all the food that you take in and help your body to function correctly.   When this happens, things like losing body fat, being healthy and feeling energetic are more easily achieved.

 

 If you don’t get enough water into your system you may experience constipation, headaches, lack concentration or worse still, develop kidney stones.

 

Water is also a vital component in the distribution of vitamins throughout your body as well as lubricating the joints, tissues and organs.

 

During the course of the day it is not uncommon to expel 2 litres of water and that is why it is so important to drink at least that much on a daily basis.  If you are exercising, particularly with those fabulous Serious Fitness trainers, then expect to drink more as they train you very hard and you’ll be sweating more!

 

Drink warm water

When water is at room temperature, your body is able to utilise it more efficiently.  This is because your body does not have to warm it

up first and is more easily dispersed into your body’s cells where it is needed.  Now, don’t get any ideas that by drinking cups of coffee, regular tea or hot chocolate that you are increasing your fluid intake.  The fact is; you are dehydrating yourself even more with the caffeine content contained within these warm drinks.  Not to mention the additional calories contained within the hot chocolate!

Opt for a slice of lemon in your warm water, a herbal tea or have a plain cup/glass of water.

 

Carry a water bottle with you everywhere

When you feel thirsty, your body is already quite dehydrated.  If you carry a water bottle with you, then you can sip away all day before you get thirsty.  Your 2 litres will be gone before you know it!

 

Have a drink before you eat

Quite often we mistake being thirsty with being hungry.  Also, some of us tend to eat out of compulsion or boredom.  If this is you and you are trying to lose body fat, then make sure that you have a drink before you reach for something to eat.  Once you have had a big glass of water, stop, listen to your body and ask yourself…”am I still hungry?”

 

Substitute water for your usual soft drinks, wine or coffee.

This one is particularly useful if you want to lose body fat.  This method will help you to cut out the additional calories contained within these drinks and help you to lose weight.  It will also help you to become more hydrated and feel more energetic. 

 

Don’t like the taste?

One of the biggest issues that we have come across as trainers is people complaining that they don’t like the taste of water and that it has no flavour.  If you feel this way, don’t drink water straight from the tap.  Instead of buying cases/bottles of soft drink, buy a water filter.  Filtered water actually tastes much sweeter than tap water and is so much better for you.  Also, in the long run, it works out much cheaper!
