Hot Topic: Organic or Non-Organic |
 |
It might seem like common sense that food grown in chemical and pesticide-free soil has to be more nutritious and safer for our bodies. But why would you spend the extra money? Is it really all that it is cracked up to be? Or simply hype? We look at the benefits of eating organic as well as how to incorporate healthier organic options into your diet without breaking the budget.
A recent study in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry found that organic foods were not only higher in nutrients, but were better for fighting cancer. With the cost of organic produce and packaged foods being a little more expensive than regular supermarket foods, there are some simple ways to incorporate healthier, organic options into your diet without breaking your budget.
1. Look for an organic equivalent at the supermarket. Often the organic equivalent isn’t that much more expensive. Instant Oats are a great example of this. Also look for organic items that you don’t but often and can store well, such as flour and sugar. These can stay in your pantry for long periods, and are a small way to make the gradual change to organic food. Canned organic food is also reasonably priced, with canned organic tomatoes generally being only 20 cents more.
2. Visit fresh food markets. C.E.R.E.S. in East Brunswick has a fantastic Wednesday and Saturday organic market with a small shop attached for dry goods. Plus most of the fresh food comes from Victoria. There’s a great café on site for organic meals and coffee also. By visiting the markets, you can start to look at which stalls offer the best deals/prices they have each week, and begin to purchase those items that you still find reasonably priced.
3. Organic websites can be convenient. Do as our staff do and order your organic supplies online. This allows you to shop on the website and compare prices, plus you get the convenience of having your groceries delivered.
4. Know which foods you don’t need to buy organic. Several foods have very thick skins or skins that aren’t eaten, and therefore don’t necessarily need to be purchased organic. These include bananas, mangos, pineapples, onions, kiwi fruit and avocados. Search the Internet for more extensive lists.
5. Got a sweet tooth? Spend the money buying organic foods full of flavour instead of your regular sugary snacks. Organic fruit tastes amazing and will satisfy any sweet tooth! Plus you get the added bonus of not adding sugar to your diet.
