HOT TOPIC: The Good Oils

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil is probably the most common one available and has been around for about 6000 years. It has great healing properties and has been proven to lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol in the body.

It usually comes in 3 varieties, and is extracted by pressing or crushing olives, however the biological value or goodness of the oil is lowered as the olives are pressed again and again.

Extra Virgin- is considered the best, as it is the least processed and contains oil from the first time the olives are pressed.

Virgin- is from the second pressing and is not quite as good for you as the Extra Virgin.

Extra Light- this undergoes a considerable amount of processing and only retains a very mild olive flavour. Therefore this type is probably not the best one to use out of all four.

When using olive oil, opt to put it on your salad rather than cooking with it.  As the heat destroys the essential fatty acids and the goodness found in these types of oils.

FISH OIL

This particular oil has been around since the 1700s and was once used to fuel lamps in the Northern regions of Britain.  Nowadays it is used for everything from reducing Diabetes and heart disease to increasing brain alertness and general wellbeing.

Studies have shown that Fish oil is a great immune booster and weight loss supplement due to increasing the hormone serotonin  (which makes us happier) so we can deal with the pressures of our busy day to day lives.

A serving of fish twice per week is one way of getting your serving, however many people go for the option of a couple of fish oil capsules per day as it is just plain easier (and has considerable fewer bones)J

Fish oil capsules can be found in any large supermarket or health food store.

FLAXSEED OIL

Flaxseed oil has been in use since the Babylonian empire over 3,000 years ago and the stem was originally used to weave linen and the seed was discarded.

Many years’ later people discovered the seeds healing properties and processed it into oil.

Flaxseed oil is high in protein (21%) and is also high in essential amino acids (these are the building blocks of muscle and must be obtained from external sources i.e. eating)

Current research shows that Flaxseed oil has the ability to help reduce the symptoms of arthritis as well as lower cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease.  It has also been shown to assist the auto immune system.

AND THE WINNER IS….

In summary, these 3 oils can ALL really help get you through the day by reducing stress and improving the function of many of your vital organs.

Like all things moderation is the key to supplementation so always use the advisory amounts on the labels when using any of these oils.
