Abhishek - 12 weeks
One Saturday afternoon a few of my friends decided to play Cricket.  As usual I had a very hectic week at work and didn’t mind the option of playing a game I have been so passionate about all my life. It had been approximately 4 years since I last played cricket back home in my country, India. I was very athletic and fit then. However since I came to Australia as a student I had not done any physical activity, just studying and working. Hence I was excited about going for a hit. But to my surprise when I started playing I could hardly run. I was extremely unfit.
I had not realised what I had done to myself by just sitting on my chair the whole day working and eating junk. I got upset and did not continue playing.

It was that moment that I decided to make a change. I came across Bruce and Anne who ran Serious Fitness Personal Training and Nutrition in Coburg which was close to where I live. I gave them a call and decided to start it off the next day.

Anne and Bruce kept me motivated to keep going through the whole 12 weeks.

Let me give a bit of background about myself.  Being of Indian decent, my diet; other than junk food; mainly comprised of rice and curries which really tasted good but were definitely not healthy. I have a very busy work schedule. I am an Accountant having to work long hours and at the same time studying for my CPA (Certified Practitioner Accountant) qualification. Time constraints was one of the main issues other than commitment to achieve my goal. Bruce was very helpful; he worked out a very effective diet for me which had a very good balance of carbohydrates and proteins. I used to train with him 4 days a week. However he insisted that I should be putting in more time myself other than working in the gym. Every morning at 6 am I received a wake up call from him to go for a run. Once I came back from my run I had to message him and let him know how many calories I burnt. I needed to eat at least 6 meals a day.

I spend most of my day sitting at work in front of the computer. Hence in order to set a reminder for myself, I entered in my Microsoft outlook calendar a reminder for eating. So no matter how busy I would be the reminder would force me to eat at regular intervals. I stopped having chocolates or any other kind of junk which would make my task to achieve my goal more difficult. Instead of eating chips and having drinks from the vending machine at work I made it a point to stack my cabinet at work with protein bars, fruits, almonds and protein powder. I made it a point to drink at least 4 litres of water every day, no more soft drinks for me. The first few weeks were difficult but trust me once you get used to it you really enjoy it. The team at Serious Fitness constantly mentioned that every bit that I did would be effective. If I am stuck at work and can’t go for a 40 minute run a 20 minute run will still do, but I should make an effort. For example my office is on the third floor. Since I started training I have stopped using the lift and make it a point to climb stairs every day with my folders and laptop and I am still doing that. It’s a small effort but it makes a different. This change has not only made me feel better physically but has also improved my productivity at work. I am more energetic and more focussed. Whether it is any task I do either at work or the gym.

Today when I have finished the 12 weeks I feel really good. It seems as if I have given myself a second chance to live life. My work colleagues have also been motivated seeing the change and they are also thinking of taking up the 12 week package. But I do realise that I should continue training hard, eating well and make sure my hard work and commitment don’t go waste.  I do have my odd cheat meals but I am still making sure I stay fit and continue on my journey to achieving good health.
